With increasing stakeholder demand for sustainable real estate and the need to improve resilience and meet net zero goals, this session will investigate how real estate can look to amplify and intensify its deployment of renewable energy. What do we mean when we talk about renewable energy and real estate? How can we develop renewable energy strategies, both on-site and off-site? And how can the industry address the business case for renewables at scale? 15:10 – 15:40 | Consider the ‘S’: Can we avert the housing crisis by turning empty spaces into homes? The post-pandemic shift in the way we work and shop has left vast swathes of commercial property sitting vacant. Meanwhile, the shortage of housing and the cost-of-living crisis have led demand for social housing to sky-rocket like never before. Recognising that repurposing unused buildings is one of the fastest ways to provide additional housing, we hear from homebuilding charity Habitat for Humanity, which recently completed two such conversions in London and has launched a toolkit for transforming disused office and retail space, helping others to navigate the challenges around retrofitting buildings into new homes. Laura Jockers, Global Head of ESG for Real Estate, M&G Tessa Kelly, director of development, Habitat for Humanity Chris Kerr, client director & head of ESG, Davitt Jones Bould Chair: Vivienne King, head of real estate social impact, The Good Economy |
