EG promotes innovative thinking in the built environment and announces the 2023 student essay competition, judged by industry professionals and academics, to support creative ideas from tomorrow’s leaders.
Who’s eligible?
Apprentices, undergraduates and post graduates in real estate
What do we want?
“As an agile developer, how would you create opportunity out of repurposing an underutilised commercial office block above disused retail space in an urban high street? Would you change its use? If so, what to and why?”
When responding, detail how you would retrofit both the office and the retail space. Consider too how you might utilise the roof space. Would you, for example, create residential accommodation or might you incorporate a vertical farm or roof-top growing to promote urban food security?
Explain the implications of your proposed repurposing from a planning, property asset/investment class perspective as well as from a wider social, environmental and economic perspective. Ensure that your plan balances the need to generate appropriate returns with the reduction of operational emissions.
Detail your thoughts in no more than 1,200 words citing your sources in a separate reference box at the end of your submission.
How will it be assessed?
You have until Monday 19 June 2023 to make your submission. All submissions will be reviewed by our expert panel, with the winner and two runners up announced in EG on 15 July.
Prize
The winning essay, along with the two runners up, will be published in EG. The winner will also receive a year’s free subscription to the EG magazine digital edition, mentoring from one of the industry judges and £250 in vouchers. Mentoring will also be available for the two runners up.
